Individuals are randomly paired. The higher-fitness pair- member wins the tournament and gains representation in the next generation. Variants of tournament selection include: N-way tour- naments (in which N individuals compete for each open slot in the new population) and stochastic tournaments (in which noise is added to each individual's fitness value, so that the winner may not always be the highest-fitness individual).
